Mid-Season Update: The Soccer Factory.
What Is The Soccer Factory?
The Soccer Factory is an indoor 5-a-side football centre which will house between 6 and 10 pitches. Sites for 10 such facilities have already been identified nationwide, with the first set to open on Aycliffe Business Park.
There is high demand for 5-a-side pitches, with research suggesting that there are currently less than half the number this demand warrants. At the moment the UK’s 100 5-a-side centres mean that the country is underserved, as there is need for at least 200 centres; indoor or out. But with the British weather being as unpredictable as it is, an increase in the number of indoor football facilities seems like a great prospect.
Indoor courts come with a high potential utilisation rate, meaning that football could, in theory, be played at The Soccer Factory 365 days-a-year.
Dan Lewis, founder and MD of The Soccer Factory, is excited for what these “factories” could mean to the future of British football. He says that The Soccer Factory offers “real community features which can be used by everyone, from lads wanting a kick-around with their mates after work, to youth teams and those looking to do more serious training.”
Investment Approach - Funding Rounds
The Soccer Factory is looking to raise £500,000 to open the first centre and the strategy is to raise the capital online, via the “crowd”, experienced business angels and institutional investors. The money will be used to fit out and open the first centre which will house a minimum of 6 state-of-the-art football courts.
The goal amount can be broken down into three areas which indicate how investment could be raised and who by:
- £20,000 - £50,000 from the “crowd”. These are online suitably-qualified business angels who can invest anywhere between £100 to £5000
- £200,000 - £230,000 anchor angels (network)
- £250,000 institutional investor / fund
The Soccer Factory is well on the way to raising the “crowd” target shown above and are now looking to open up further dialogue with angel networks and institutional investors. But don’t worry if you’re an aspiring online angel investor, there is still plenty of time for you to invest anything from £100 into The Soccer Factory.
There have been expressions of interest for follow on rounds from a number of institutional investors which could speed up the scaling of the business and potentially mean an early exit opportunity for seed stage investors or the opportunity to “follow on” with additional funding to help the business grow.
The Soccer Factory is a tried and tested business model but with interesting differentiators, including a gymnasium partnership. The plan is to scale the business to a point where it will become either a strategic acquisition for an existing operator, or potentially offer an interesting acquisition for a private equity house.
